This is the second courtyard to the temple of literature. Hanoi's first university established in the eleventh century AD. |
he second courtyard bordered on both sides with a sort of grave stone shrine. Each grave stone is on the back of a giant turtle. The reason for the turtle is a legend relating to a giant turtle/god coming out of near by Huan Kiem lake. |
The temple housed several of these slightly larger than life size statues. Each is of a person who live some time between the temples founding and the sixteenth century AD. Each had incense burning in front. Although there were a lot of turists, there were also some that had come to pray to the statues. |

This is an sort of secondary shrine in the third courtyard along with the two grave stone shrines. It had a couple porcelan statues and some stone tablets... didn't want to disturb the prayers. |
This is the temple of literature. It is comprised of two buildings. The first is actually more of an open area, the larger building (two-story) in back is the main temple shrine. |
A view of the city taken from the second floor of the temple of literature. Nice view. I also enjoy the architecture. |
